Vaibhav Sooryavanshi named Bihar captain for Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy

Bihar names 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi captain for the opening Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy matches.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is 15. On November 14, he'll captain Bihar in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy opener in Indore — his first senior captaincy gig.

The Bihar Cricket Association handed him the job to replace injured Sakibul Gani for the first two matches, with Suraj Kashyap as vice-captain. Coach Manish Ojha called it historic and pointed to Sooryavanshi's maturity, his IPL run, and his recent India T20I appearances. None of it's typical for someone still in his teens.

It's a bet. Bihar's betting that a kid who's already played senior international cricket can handle the added weight of calling the shots. Whether that pressure helps or hurts him — and whether domestic boards should be handing captaincy to teenagers at all — is a different question. The 17-member squad goes to Indore with him leading.

CricHubb Take

Early captaincy can ruin young talent or forge it. What Bihar's really testing is whether Sooryavanshi's rare maturity extends to handling the isolation that comes with wearing the armband — because none of his IPL form or international caps have asked him to lead.
