South Africa rest key players for dead-rubber ODI against Australia

South Africa used the dead rubber to give opportunities to fringe players while protecting established names ahead of the Test series.

South Africa made five changes and opted to bowl first in the third ODI against Australia in Potchefstroom on Wednesday, resting key players including captain Temba Bavuma ahead of the Test series. Aiden Markram led the side with David Miller also among those rested.

The changes came with South Africa already holding a 2-0 series lead after victories in Durban and Johannesburg. The rested players will return for the Test series that begins after the ODI rubber concludes.

Australia posted 322 for 9 before rain ended South Africa's chase at 145 for 4, giving the visitors a 45-run victory via the DLS method. The result prevented a clean sweep but did not affect the series outcome.

The rotation strategy reflects South Africa's confidence in their squad depth, but it also means the Test series will begin without recent match practice for their most experienced players.
