Gerald Coetzee returns for South Africa after Anrich Nortje ruled out

Gerald Coetzee replaces injured Anrich Nortje in South Africa's XI for the deciding Test against Australia at Newlands.

Gerald Coetzee will return to Test cricket after nearly two years when South Africa name their XI for the series decider against Australia at Newlands. The 26-year-old fast bowler replaces Anrich Nortje, who sustained a groin injury after bowling only 3.3 overs in the second Test in Gqeberha. South Africa won that match by an innings and 31 runs to level the three-match series at 1-1.

Coetzee has played only two first-class matches since his last Test appearance in November 2024. He took 3-31 and 1-29 in his most recent four-day outing for South Africa A against Bangladesh A in August. Captain Temba Bavuma said Coetzee's ability to bowl consistently above 140kph earned him the spot ahead of Corbin Bosch and Dane Paterson.

The only change leaves Keshav Maharaj on the bench again after Simon Harmer retained his place. The match runs from October 27 to 31 at Newlands, with both teams locked at 1-1.

CricHubb Take

South Africa's willingness to pick Coetzee despite limited recent cricket shows how much they value raw pace over match readiness in the enforcer role.
