Gill says Kamboj and Nabi will remain in ODI selection mix

Gill confirmed Kamboj and Nabi stay in ODI plans as the team seeks all-round depth at number eight.

Shubman Gill said Anshul Kamboj and Auqib Nabi will continue to feature in ODI selection discussions despite difficult debuts. Both players received call-ups during the West Indies series after injuries to established bowlers. Gill noted the number eight position requires a player who can contribute with bat and ball.

Kamboj and Nabi shared eight wickets across the three matches but conceded runs at high rates on flat pitches. Gill said international cricket sometimes demands time for new players to adjust. He added that the team does not know which players will remain fit for the 2027 World Cup.

India will host five ODIs in New Zealand next month. Gill said the side wants its preferred combination available for that series.

Gill's backing of the two debutants suggests the selection panel will persist with seam-bowling all-rounders even after expensive outings. The approach prioritises long-term balance over immediate results.
