Chinmay Sutar scores 400 not out for Mizoram in Ranji Trophy

Sutar's unbeaten 400 is the second quadruple century in Ranji Trophy history after Nimbalkar's 443 in 1948.

Chinmay Sutar became the second batter to score a quadruple century in the Ranji Trophy, making 400 not out off 517 balls for Mizoram against Nagaland in Sovima. The 29-year-old emulated Bhausaheb Babasaheb Nimbalkar, who scored 443 not out for Maharashtra against Kathiawar in 1948.

Mizoram declared at 581 for 9 once Sutar reached the landmark. He hit 46 fours and seven sixes. Nimbalkar's innings remains the highest individual score in Indian domestic cricket after the Kathiawar captain refused to bowl further overs that could have allowed him to surpass Don Bradman's 452 not out.

Sutar, who moved from Mumbai to Mizoram ahead of the season, said he was unaware of the milestone until after the declaration. He added he was proud to stand second on the list of highest Ranji innings.

CricHubb Take

Sutar's innings shows that substantial first-class scores remain possible even in the shortest format of the domestic schedule when a Plate match runs its full course.
