Shadman Islam remained unbeaten on 99 after facing 219 balls and hitting ten fours on day one of the first Test against West Indies at Mirpur. He has not scored a century in 17 innings since April and has a conversion rate of 11.1 per cent as a Test opener.

Bangladesh coach Mohammad Salahuddin said Shadman assessed the wicket and took control during the innings. Salahuddin added that the innings will teach Shadman a lot about converting starts. Shadman hit ten boundaries and took 38 singles before bad light ended play.

The pitch offered movement and spin. Bangladesh reached 96 for two at lunch and 213 for three at stumps.

The slow scoring rate and the coach's comments suggest Shadman faces internal pressure to turn promising innings into match-defining scores.
