India batting coach Sitanshu Kotak said Bhuvneshwar Kumar's recall for the five-match T20I series in New Zealand was driven by the need for experience in Jasprit Bumrah's absence. Bhuvneshwar last played for India in November 2022 and returns at 36 after taking 28 wickets in IPL 2026.

Kotak said young bowlers are performing well but selectors also value experience when Bumrah is rested. He added that Bhuvneshwar's strong IPL performances over two seasons contributed to the selection.

Bhuvneshwar will be the third-oldest bowler to represent India if he plays in the series. Kotak declined to comment on Mohammed Shami's prospects, saying selection decisions rest with the panel.

The recall frames experience as a risk-management tool rather than a nostalgia pick, a shift that could extend the selection window for other veterans if Bumrah's workload continues to be managed conservatively.
