Why will Australia treat the Zimbabwe ODIs as preparation for South Africa?

Australia will use the Zimbabwe ODIs to prepare for the South Africa series rather than treat them as a standalone target.

Australia captain Pat Cummins indicated that the three-match ODI series in Zimbabwe will serve mainly as preparation for the subsequent tour of South Africa. The team will play three ODIs in Zimbabwe followed by three ODIs and Tests in South Africa later this year.

Cummins said the focus remains on maintaining peak performance for the World Test Championship and the South Africa series. Several senior players are expected to be rested for the Zimbabwe leg to manage workloads ahead of the more important assignment.

By signalling the hierarchy of priorities, Cummins has made clear that results in Zimbabwe carry less weight than fitness management for South Africa. This approach reduces the risk of injuries ahead of a series that directly affects Australia’s World Test Championship standing.
