The ECB and independent Cricket Regulator cleared England captain Ben Stokes and bowler Gus Atkinson of wrongdoing following a review of a nightclub incident. Both players got written warnings only for breaching team curfew after England's win over New Zealand, and they remain available for the third Test.

Sky Sports reported the regulator found insufficient evidence on the main allegations. The incident occurred after the second Test and drew media attention in the days that followed.

Stokes and Atkinson are expected to rejoin the squad without further disciplinary action ahead of the third Test, which begins later this week.

The regulator's quick exoneration on the main charge sidesteps a thornier question: what exactly counts as a breach serious enough to bench a captain mid-series? The curfew warnings are window dressing. England's silence on what actually happened — and whether the rules were enforced equally for everyone — is the real story.
