Left-arm spinner Sachin Rathi took six for 27 as Tamil Nadu U-23 bowled out Rest of India U-23 for 179 on the opening day at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium. Rathi removed Angkrish Raghuvanshi after the opener reached 51, then cleaned up the middle order and tail.

Raghuvanshi and captain Priyanshu Moliya put together the only substantial stand, adding 74 for the third wicket. By stumps, Tamil Nadu had reached 45 without loss in 11 overs, with S.R. Athish unbeaten.

Rathi said the pitch was good for batting and his first spell changed the complexion of the innings. Tamil Nadu will resume on Friday with a significant first-innings advantage.

Rathi's haul puts him in the frame for the India U-23 side, but the real test comes if Tamil Nadu are asked to bat last on a surface that still turns.
