Mohit Sharma set to join CSK as bowling coach for IPL 2027

Mohit Sharma returns to CSK as bowling coach under Zaheer Khan, replacing Eric Simons ahead of the 2027 IPL season.

Chennai Super Kings have appointed former India seamer Mohit Sharma as bowling coach for the 2027 IPL season. CEO Kasi Viswanathan confirmed that head coach Zaheer Khan recommended the 38-year-old, who replaces Eric Simons in the role.

Sharma played four seasons for CSK across two stints from 2013-15 and 2019, taking 134 wickets in 120 IPL matches. He won the Purple Cap in 2014 while playing for the franchise and retired from professional cricket in December 2025 after taking 41 wickets across two seasons with Gujarat Titans.

Zaheer will finalise additional support staff in coming weeks, with one overseas appointment expected. Sridharan Sriram and Rajiv Kumar are likely to continue as assistant coaches. The franchise confirmed no trade discussions are underway at this stage.

CricHubb Take

Sharma's appointment signals CSK's intent to rebuild their bowling identity from within. A former Purple Cap winner who succeeded through variations rather than pace, he brings the kind of death-bowling expertise the franchise has lacked in recent seasons. His presence alongside Zaheer creates a coaching setup built on shared understanding of what works in the IPL's shortest format.
