Ashwin urges three-times compensation for players who withdraw from franchise contracts

Ashwin proposed financial penalties for players who pull out of franchise contracts without valid cause.

Former India cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin has called for stricter sanctions against players who register for franchise league auctions and then withdraw without valid reasons.

Ashwin said the franchise should receive three times the player's auction fee as compensation. He argued that current franchise structures remain too loose to impose global bans, noting that the same players move between multiple leagues each season.

Ashwin suggested the ICC may eventually need to regulate franchise cricket by limiting the number of leagues worldwide and capping how many leagues a player can join each year. Kieron Pollard withdrew from the SA20 2027 season after his appointment as Mumbai Indians head coach.

Ashwin's proposal targets a structural gap that lets marquee players treat shorter franchise commitments as flexible options rather than binding obligations.
