Wasim Jaffer says Rohit Sharma should have kept MI captaincy
Wasim Jaffer argued that Rohit Sharma should have retained both India's ODI captaincy and Mumbai Indians leadership until after the 2027 World Cup.
Former India cricketer Wasim Jaffer said Rohit Sharma should have remained captain of Mumbai Indians rather than handing over to Hardik Pandya. Jaffer said the decision to replace Rohit with Shubman Gill as India's ODI captain was understandable but the baton should have passed after the 2027 World Cup. He said when a player of Rohit Sharma's calibre is available, he should lead. Jaffer added that Gill has done well but Rohit deserved to continue until the next ODI World Cup. Rohit has scored 604 runs in 12 ODI innings this year at an average of 50.33, including two centuries. He will lead India in the upcoming five-match ODI series against New Zealand starting November 4.
CricHubb Take
Jaffer's view reflects a broader belief that experienced leaders should not be moved aside until they show clear decline. The counter-argument is that grooming Gill now gives him four years of captaincy experience before the next World Cup cycle begins.
