Josh Hazlewood finished with career-best figures of six for 49 as Australia defeated South Africa by 214 runs in the first Test at Kingsmead. The visitors needed six wickets on the final morning and wrapped up the match shortly after lunch despite resistance from Aiden Markram. Hazlewood broke a 69-run stand by dismissing Wiaan Mulder and finished with three of the last six wickets.

Australia took a 1-0 lead in the three-match series and will look to seal victory in Gqeberha. Hazlewood exploited the abrasive Durban surface to extract reverse swing throughout the match. The depth of Australia's pace attack gives them confidence heading into the second Test starting on Sunday.

South Africa were set 319 to win but could not build on Markram's 75 as the Australian quicks maintained pressure on a deteriorating pitch. Hazlewood's figures surpassed his previous best of five for 30 taken against England in 2019.

Hazlewood's ability to reverse the old ball on abrasive surfaces gives Australia a weapon that South Africa struggled to counter throughout the match.
