South Africa declared their first innings at 425 for nine on day three of the second Test against Australia in Gqeberha. Temba Bavuma scored a career-best 179 and added century partnerships with Marco Jansen and Simon Harmer after the Proteas had slipped to 110 for six.

Kagiso Rabada, returning from injury, dismissed Nic Maddinson with his fourth ball to leave Australia at three for one at stumps. Scott Boland took five for 81 for Australia, but the rest of the attack could not contain the lower order. Play will resume 15 minutes early on day four to recover time lost to rain.

Australia trail by 422 runs and require 223 more to avoid the follow-on. Bavuma's innings spanned 334 balls and included stands of 132 with Jansen, who made 85, and 87 with Harmer.

CricHubb Take

Bavuma's marathon innings shifts the series balance at a point where Australia had appeared in control after three rain-affected days. The declaration sets up a clear target and removes any ambiguity about South Africa's intent. With Rabada fit and the pitch offering seam movement, the Proteas now have both scoreboard pressure and a bowling attack capable of exploiting conditions over the remaining two days.
