ICC unveils 2027 ODI World Cup format with new Super Series stage
The ICC announced a new four-stage format for the 2027 ODI World Cup featuring a Super Series stage and 57 matches across three African hosts.
The International Cricket Council confirmed a four-stage format for the 2027 ODI World Cup on Thursday. The 14-team tournament will run from October 2 to November 21 across South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia, with 57 matches scheduled at 12 venues. The structure includes pre-tournament qualifiers, a Super Series in Windhoek, a 12-team group stage and a seven-team Super 7 phase before the semifinals and final. The ICC stated the revamped structure aims to ensure greater consequence from the opening match and a stronger competitive narrative throughout the tournament. Ten teams have already qualified directly, with the remaining four spots to be decided through a global qualifier early next year.

The expanded format places a premium on squad depth, as teams will now need to sustain performance across 13 matches rather than nine to lift the trophy.
