Karthik says no point in recalling Shami for 2027 World Cup
Dinesh Karthik said India should not recall Mohammed Shami for the 2027 World Cup as the team has moved on.
Former India wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik said there is no point in recalling Mohammed Shami for the 2027 World Cup because India has already moved beyond him. Karthik said the current pace stocks are sufficient and selectors should not go back to Shami despite his strong domestic performances.
Shami last played for India in the 2025 Champions Trophy after recovering from a series of injuries. The selection committee has since backed Harshit Rana, Prasidh Krishna and Gurnoor Brar as the next generation of fast bowlers.
Karthik picked Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Harshit Rana and Arshdeep Singh as his four specialist pacers for the World Cup. He said Arshdeep's left-arm angle gives India a different option on South African pitches.
CricHubb Take
Karthik's stance reflects a broader view that India's fast-bowling depth has improved enough to move past the Shami era. The selectors appear committed to the younger group even after the recent ODI bowling collapses, which suggests experience alone will not guarantee a recall.
