Ayush Mhatre suffers Grade 4 right hamstring tear in Ranji Trophy
Mumbai vice-captain Ayush Mhatre suffered a Grade 4 right hamstring tear while batting against Chandigarh and is expected to miss the first half of the Ranji season.
Mumbai vice-captain Ayush Mhatre suffered a Grade 4 tear in his right hamstring during the Ranji Trophy opener against Chandigarh at the Wankhede Stadium. The 19-year-old sustained the injury while running between the wickets during his 48-run knock on the opening day. Scans confirmed the severity of the tear and he did not take the field for Chandigarh's second innings.
Mhatre had returned to competitive cricket after spending three months at the BCCI's Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru recovering from a left hamstring injury sustained in April during the IPL. Captain Siddhesh Lad said the opener would likely miss the first half of the Ranji season. Mumbai will also be without Yashasvi Jaiswal for their second match against Himachal Pradesh as he travels with the India A side.
Spinners Shams Mulani and Tanush Kotian took three wickets each to bowl out Chandigarh for 196 in their second innings. Mumbai completed an innings and 155-run victory on the third day. Tushar Deshpande finished with match figures of seven for 52, including a hat-trick in the first innings.

Mhatre's recurrence raises questions about workload management for young batters returning from long layoffs. Three months of rehabilitation followed by a fresh Grade 4 tear in his first match suggests the recovery protocols may need review before the next domestic season.
