Alex Carey proposes Ponting-Kallis trophy for Australia-South Africa Tests
Alex Carey suggests naming a trophy after Ponting and Kallis to formalise the Australia-South Africa Test rivalry.
Australia wicketkeeper Alex Carey has suggested naming a permanent trophy after Ricky Ponting and Jacques Kallis for the Test series between Australia and South Africa. Carey made the proposal ahead of the deciding Test at Newlands, where South Africa could overtake Australia at the top of the Test rankings with a series win.
Ponting is the leading run-scorer in Tests between the two nations, while Kallis ranks among the top three. The proposal comes as both teams lack perpetual silverware for their storied rivalry, unlike the Border-Gavaskar Trophy between India and Australia.
A series victory would also allow Pat Cummins' side to become the first visiting team to win a Test series in South Africa since England in 2020-21. The third Test begins on Tuesday at Newlands.

Carey's proposal reveals how even established rivalries need formal recognition to maintain their place in cricket's institutional memory.
