Soham Desai said Rohit Sharma underwent hip and hamstring surgeries after the 2017 Champions Trophy final and requires two strength sessions per week to avoid injury risk. Desai warned that the 39-year-old would be a ticking bomb without consistent fitness work and would not have lasted without regular strength training. He made these comments during a podcast with Prashant Desai.

Rohit Sharma has played international cricket for 19 years and now features only in ODIs. India will play New Zealand in a T20 match on November 4 at Sky Stadium in Wellington. The India team has already arrived in New Zealand for the limited-overs series.

Desai emphasised that Rohit's longevity depends on maintaining his fitness regimen. The former India captain has been managing his workload carefully in recent years. His fitness routine includes specific exercises to protect his hips and hamstrings from further damage.

Rohit's decision to play only ODIs may extend his career but also reduces his exposure to the shorter formats where India's depth is already being tested by emerging players.
