Chennai Super Kings captain Ruturaj Gaikwad scored an unbeaten 101 from 172 balls batting at number seven as Maharashtra declared their first innings on 527 for five against Jharkhand at MCA Stadium in Pune on Tuesday. Gaikwad struck six fours and one six in his tenth first-class century, adding significantly to a 358-run lead after Jharkhand were bowled out for 169. He shared a decisive sixth-wicket stand with Ankit Bawne, who made 169 from 253 balls, after Maharashtra slipped to 345 for five. Gaikwad returned to the Maharashtra side after representing India A against Australia and has now accumulated nearly 3,500 first-class runs in 49 matches at an average of around 45. The declaration leaves Jharkhand facing a steep deficit on a pitch that has already shown signs of variable bounce.

CricHubb Take

Gaikwad's willingness to bat lower in the order and still convert underlines his adaptability, which could prove valuable if Maharashtra need him to anchor a chase or build a second-innings total on a wearing surface.
