Herschelle Gibbs called for South Africa to bring back Kagiso Rabada and make two batting changes ahead of the second Test against Australia in Gqeberha. He wants Simon Harmer dropped to accommodate Rabada and suggested Ryan Rickelton shift down the order to keep wickets.

Gibbs also proposed dropping Kyle Verreynne for uncapped batter Marques Ackerman. He outlined a pace attack of Rabada, Marco Jansen and Anrich Nortje, supported by Wiaan Mulder and Keshav Maharaj.

South Africa lost the first Test in Durban after failing to chase 421. Josh Hazlewood took six wickets in the second innings as the Proteas were bowled out for 206. The second Test begins on October 18.

Gibbs's intervention shows how quickly a series can slip when injuries and form issues coincide, forcing former players to publicly push for changes that selectors have yet to confirm.
