Sitanshu Kotak cites experience for Bhuvneshwar Kumar recall
Kotak says Bhuvneshwar's IPL form and experience prompted his recall after four years, while refusing to speculate on Mohammed Shami's selection chances.
India batting coach Sitanshu Kotak said selectors recalled Bhuvneshwar Kumar for the T20I series against New Zealand because the 36-year-old brings experience the side lacked during the England tour. Kotak noted that young bowlers performed well but the team needed proven performers when Jasprit Bumrah was unavailable.
Bhuvneshwar has taken 48 wickets in 30 IPL matches across the last two seasons for Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Kotak added that the selectors also considered the seamer's strong recent form and suitability for New Zealand conditions. The veteran last played a T20I in November 2022.
Kotak declined to comment on Mohammed Shami's prospects, saying only that he is not a selector. Shami has not played for India since the 2025 Champions Trophy final and will feature in the upcoming Ranji Trophy season for Bengal.
