Australia's second-Test defeat raises prospect of selection reset before Cape Town decider

Crushing defeat in Gqeberha raises prospect that Australia's long-standing selection policy may finally be tested.

Australia's innings-and-31-run defeat in the second Test has exposed batting frailties that may force selectors to reconsider their reluctance to drop established performers. The tourists were bowled out for 99 in the first innings at Gqeberha, with Marnus Labuschagne averaging 22.09 across 47 innings since his last Test century.

Cameron Green and Josh Inglis are expected to return from injury for the third Test, giving selectors additional options at the top of the order. Cooper Connolly is also in contention. The selectors have already shown willingness to change a winning bowling formula during the tour.

The series stands at 1-1, with the decider beginning on October 27 at Newlands. Australia's 75 percent points percentage still leads the World Test Championship table, but the defeat has created a genuine selection dilemma ahead of a match that will decide the outcome of the series.
