The hosts reached 326 for six in their second innings while chasing 349, leaving them four points behind second-placed Kent in Division Two.
Ricardo Vasconcelos scored 132 and Calvin Harrison made 50 as Northants built a strong position after Derbyshire posted 372 in their first innings. George Bartlett remained unbeaten on 24 when the players left the field with 22.2 overs remaining.
Northants face Middlesex at Lord's in their final match of the season. A win would have lifted them above Kent into second place with one round remaining.
