BBL targets Indian market with Chennai opener and potential US ownership
The December 12 opener and Govil's interest mark BBL's deliberate push into international markets and ownership.
The Big Bash League will stage its first overseas match when Melbourne Renegades play Perth Scorchers at Chennai's MA Chidambaram Stadium on December 12. Five thousand tickets sold within hours of going on sale, exceeding Cricket Australia's expectations for the 35,000-capacity venue.
US tech entrepreneur Govil, who already owns or co-owns teams in Major League Cricket and The Hundred, has expressed interest in purchasing a BBL franchise. Renegades and Hurricanes are among the teams that interest him. The move aligns with the league's stated goal of becoming a global product rather than remaining an Australian domestic competition.
Organisers have no reserve day for the Chennai match despite the city's monsoon season. General manager Alistair Dobson said the BBL offers something different from other T20 leagues and that fans in India want to experience its colour and atmosphere in person. He indicated the league would consider bringing Women's Big Bash League matches to India in the future.
