BBL to open 2026-27 season with Perth Scorchers versus Melbourne Renegades in Chennai

The Big Bash League will open its 2026-27 season at Chennai's MA Chidambaram Stadium on December 12, with Perth Scorchers facing Melbourne Renegades. The match is part of a week-long celebration of India-Australia bilateral ties announced by the two prime ministers.

Phil Rigby, BBL's head of league operations, said the game stems from a government initiative to strengthen relations through cricket. He confirmed the league will bring its authentic experience including the Power Surge and a new designated hitter rule.

Perth Scorchers coach Adam Voges said he will consult Chennai Super Kings batting coach Michael Hussey about conditions at Chepauk. Several Scorchers players including Mitchell Marsh and Cooper Connolly have IPL experience.
