BCCI approves 30 per cent raise for domestic umpires and match referees

Domestic umpires will receive a 30 per cent fee increase after the BCCI approved a performance-based grading system at its AGM on 18 September.

The BCCI approved a 30 per cent increase in fees for domestic umpires and a revised pay structure for match referees at its 95th Annual General Meeting on 18 September. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia said umpires will be graded in four categories with appointments based on performance assessments. The last major revision of domestic umpiring fees came in 2017-18.

Umpires in the top two grades currently receive Rs 40,000 per match day while those in lower grades get Rs 30,000. Match referees were paid Rs 30,000 per day after the 2017-18 restructuring before their fee was raised to Rs 40,000. The board will also introduce relegation and promotion for 10 umpires from each grade at the end of every season.

The BCCI has not finalised a similar restructuring for scorers. Saikia said the board will need more time to assess their situation. The AGM also approved grand celebrations for the IPL's 20th season in 2027 and initiated planning for BCCI centenary celebrations in 2028.
