BCCI secretary backs women's team refusal of Asia Cup trophy
Devajit Saikia defended India's decision to reject the Women's Asia Cup trophy from ACC president Mohsin Naqvi after the 72-run final win over Sri Lanka.
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia said India's women's team acted correctly in refusing to accept the Women's Asia Cup trophy from ACC president Mohsin Naqvi. The team defeated Sri Lanka by 72 runs in the final in Dubai on Sunday but declined to collect the trophy and medals during the presentation ceremony.
Saikia confirmed the board had requested an alternative handover format before the match. Photographs showed Saikia and BCCI vice president Rajiv Shukla speaking with Naqvi in the Royal Box after the ceremony. The board has not released details of the discussion.
Saikia stated that India will eventually reclaim the Asia Cup trophies. He gave no timeline for any future handover and said the women's team had shown solidarity with the men's team on the same issue.
