BCCI seeks franchise views on abolishing IPL Impact Player rule for 2027
The Board of Control for Cricket in India has asked franchises for feedback on whether to retain the Impact Player rule ahead of the 2027 season. The provision, introduced in 2023, allows teams to substitute one player during a match.
Critics including Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have argued that the rule has limited opportunities for all-rounders. If it is removed, players who can contribute with both bat and ball would gain greater value in starting XIs.
Naman Dhir is among those who could benefit. He took three wickets on T20I debut for India after limited bowling chances at Mumbai Indians under the current rule. Washington Sundar, Shivam Dube, Rahul Tewatia and Venkatesh Iyer are also viewed as players whose secondary skills could become more relevant without a specialist substitute option.
