Billy Root retires from professional cricket at 34

Billy Root ends his 14-year professional career after seven seasons with Glamorgan and four trophy wins.

Billy Root, the younger brother of England Test captain Joe Root, has announced his retirement from professional cricket at the end of the 2026 season. The 34-year-old left-handed batter made his professional debut in April 2015 and played 83 first-class, 60 List A and 50 T20 matches across a 14-year career.

Root began with Nottinghamshire before joining Glamorgan in 2019, where he played a key role in two One-Day Cup titles and the club's promotion to Division 1 of the County Championship last year. He scored nearly 5,000 runs for Glamorgan and won four trophies in total during his career.

Root made only two appearances in the County Championship this season and captained Glamorgan's second XI. In a social media post, he described his career as an absolute privilege and said he would not change anything about his journey.
