Bond says Bhuvneshwar can be lethal with new ball in New Zealand

Bond backs Bhuvneshwar's new-ball threat while Iyer calls his recall a sweet headache for the bowling group.

Former New Zealand fast bowler Shane Bond said Bhuvneshwar Kumar's ability to exploit swing and seam movement could trouble the hosts in the upcoming T20I series. Bond highlighted the 36-year-old's composure in pressure situations and described his presence as a calming influence on the Indian bowling attack. Bhuvneshwar returns to the T20I side after nearly four years following strong performances for Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

India captain Shreyas Iyer said Bhuvneshwar brings experience the side lacked after the IPL. The pacer has taken 28 wickets in 16 matches during IPL 2026 and sits seventh on India's all-time T20I wicket-takers list with 90 scalps. Iyer called the selection a sweet headache that will motivate other bowlers in the squad.

Bond added that early-season conditions in Christchurch, Wellington and Hamilton should offer bounce and lateral movement. He said the timing of the series favours seamers and will serve as useful preparation for India's younger quicks ahead of the 2028 T20 World Cup co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand.
