Brett Lee warns T20 economics may reduce express pace bowling

Brett Lee has expressed concern that the financial incentives of T20 franchise cricket are discouraging bowlers from bowling at express pace. Speaking on Wisden's Scoop Extended podcast, Lee said he is not seeing young fast bowlers challenging the 160 kph barrier that he and Shoaib Akhtar once reached.

Lee clocked his fastest delivery at 160.8 kph against New Zealand in 2005. He suggested that bowlers are now prioritising longevity and multiple franchise contracts over raw speed, choosing to bowl in the 135-140 kph range to reduce physical stress and extend their careers to 15 or 20 years.

The former Australia pacer said this trend worries him because it reduces the spectacle of bowlers charging in and bowling quick. He called for young fast bowlers to push their limits rather than settle for a comfortable pace bracket that protects their bodies but diminishes the contest between bat and ball.
