Chennai Super Kings appoint Mohit Sharma as bowling coach

CSK confirmed Mohit Sharma as bowling coach and named Albie Morkel and Gareth Batty as assistant coaches for the 2027 season.

Chennai Super Kings announced three coaching appointments on October 27 for the 2027 IPL season. Mohit Sharma will serve as bowling coach, while Gareth Batty and Albie Morkel join as assistant coaches under head coach Zaheer Khan. The franchise confirmed the moves after parting ways with Eric Simons, Tommy Simsek, Rajiv Kumar, Greg King and Michael Hussey the previous day.

Mohit Sharma returns to the franchise where he made his IPL debut in 2013 and won the Purple Cap in 2014. He played 120 IPL matches and took 134 wickets before retiring from all forms of cricket in December 2025. Albie Morkel, who featured in CSK's title-winning sides in 2010 and 2011, will serve as Zaheer's deputy after recently taking charge of Joburg Super Kings. Gareth Batty arrives from Surrey, where he guided the county to three consecutive County Championship titles between 2022 and 2024.

The new coaching staff will work with Zaheer Khan, MS Dhoni and Ruturaj Gaikwad ahead of the November 15 retention deadline. Franchises must finalise retention lists by that date, with the IPL 2027 mini-auction scheduled for December 16.
