Day 4 of second Test: Australia face defeat after South Africa surge

Australia are staring down defeat. Their batting fell apart on day four, and South Africa now have a realistic path to victory — and a series-levelling win.

Temba Bavuma's 179 gave the hosts the platform they needed. Australia had come into the day hoping to build a lead but lost momentum quickly, and with it, their grip on the match. South Africa will look to enforce the follow-on if they can.

For several Australian players, careers are now on the line. The middle order's vulnerability — especially against the new ball in difficult conditions — is laid bare. They'll need to regroup fast to stay in this contest.
