Dhananjaya de Silva steps down as Sri Lanka Test captain

Dhananjaya de Silva stepped down after 18 Tests in charge and will continue playing red-ball cricket for Sri Lanka.

Dhananjaya de Silva resigned as Sri Lanka's Test captain with immediate effect after 18 matches in charge. The 35-year-old informed the selection committee that leadership should pass to the next generation and confirmed he remains available for selection as a player.

De Silva took over from Dimuth Karunaratne in January 2024. Sri Lanka won seven of his 18 Tests, lost eight and drew three. He scored 1,130 runs at 36.45 and took nine wickets at 44.44 during his tenure. Series victories came against Afghanistan, Bangladesh and New Zealand.

Sri Lanka Cricket CEO Ashley de Silva thanked him for his leadership. The team's next Test assignment is a two-match series against Pakistan starting in Rawalpindi on November 9.
