Dhoni's recommendation seals Zaheer Khan's CSK appointment

MS Dhoni played a decisive role in Chennai Super Kings appointing Zaheer Khan as head coach for IPL 2027. The franchise wanted an Indian coach after parting ways with Stephen Fleming following 18 years in charge.

Dhoni recommended Zaheer after the cricket management committee, comprising owner Rupa Gurunath and captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, agreed he fitted the role. Zaheer has previous IPL coaching experience with Mumbai Indians and Lucknow Super Giants. He received a one-year contract that is open to extension.

CSK managing director Kasi Viswanathan said the franchise wanted a coach who would focus solely on the IPL without ties to other global leagues. Zaheer has no such associations apart from co-owning Antwerp Anchors in the European T20 Premier League.
