England rolled Pakistan for 133 on the first morning at Edgbaston. Josh Tongue finished with 4-42, Ollie Robinson and Jofra Archer took three wickets each, and Robinson's lbw dismissal of Saim Ayub brought up his 100th Test wicket.
Pakistan have now fallen short of 200 in five straight innings of the series. Their reshuffled top order had no answer to the new ball.
By stumps England were 23 runs in front after Zak Crawley and Harry Brook put on 104 for the fourth wicket.
