England's 429 for 4 ends in defeat after Sri Lanka's record chase

England's record total of 429 for 4 proved insufficient as Sri Lanka chased it down for the second-highest successful ODI run chase.

England posted 429 for 4 against Sri Lanka in Rawalpindi but still lost by two wickets. Harry Brook scored 202 off 116 balls, the fastest double century in ODI history, yet Sri Lanka completed the second-highest successful run chase in the format.

Brook's innings featured 21 fours and 10 sixes. He added 159 runs with Joe Root and an unbroken 185 with Will Jacks, who finished unbeaten on 66. England added 156 runs in the final 10 overs.

Sri Lanka lost their first two wickets for 24 runs but recovered through Pavan Rathnayake's 130 and Dasun Shanaka's 97 off 50 balls. Janith Liyanage hit the winning six with one ball remaining after Josh Tongue took two wickets in the final over.
