ICC introduces five-run penalty for time-wasting batters
The International Cricket Council announced new playing conditions on Thursday that introduce a five-run penalty for batters who repeatedly waste time. The first offence draws a warning, the second a final warning, and the third triggers the penalty. Repeated breaches can also attract Code of Conduct action.
Pink balls may now be used in daytime Tests if both teams agree before the match starts. The decision must apply for the entire Test and cannot be changed once play begins. The rule aims to reduce lost time due to bad light.
Other changes include greater umpire discretion on when a ball is considered finally settled and a requirement to complete the final over of the day if conditions allow. T20Is now have a fixed 15-minute interval that can be reduced to 10 minutes if time has been lost.
