India faces multiple selection questions ahead of New Zealand tour

India's tour of New Zealand raises questions over Gautam Gambhir's Test future and senior players' World Cup prospects.

India's all-format tour of New Zealand puts Gautam Gambhir's Test future, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli's 2027 World Cup plans, and Shreyas Iyer's T20I captaincy under scrutiny. The two-Test series beginning November 19 could shape India's World Test Championship campaign and determine whether the head coach retains his role. The ODIs form part of the road to the 2027 World Cup, while the T20Is will test a new captain's approach.

Sunil Gavaskar has called for greater participation by established India players in domestic competitions. He argued that the absence of senior international players from tournaments like the Ranji Trophy makes it difficult to assess emerging talent. The all-format series against New Zealand offers an opportunity to evaluate players across different stages of their careers.

India last played an all-format series against New Zealand four years ago. The Tests carry additional weight after the side missed the previous World Test Championship final and suffered a home whitewash in 2024.
