India win first Asian Games 2026 medal with shooting silver

India claimed their opening medal of the Games with silver in the women’s 10m air rifle team event, and Elavenil Valarivan added an individual silver later the same day.

India won its first medal of the Asian Games 2026 when Elavenil Valarivan, Sonam Maskar and Vidarsa Vinod took silver in the women’s 10m air rifle team event on Sunday. The trio scored 1898.0 points, finishing 6.2 behind China’s world-record 1904.2 and 0.9 ahead of hosts Japan. Sonam led the Indian effort with 634.1 points, followed by Elavenil on 633.5 and Vidarsa on 630.4. Elavenil later added an individual silver, finishing second in the eight-woman final with 252.4 points.
