Ireland must play World Cup Qualifier after rain washes out Afghanistan ODI

Persistent rain forced the abandonment of Ireland's opening ODI against Afghanistan in Bready on Wednesday without a ball bowled. The washout ended Ireland's slim mathematical chance of climbing into automatic qualification spots in the ICC ODI rankings before the September 30, 2026 cut-off date.

Ireland, currently ranked 12th, needed a 5-0 series sweep over Afghanistan and West Indies losses against India to qualify directly. The 2027 ODI World Cup, hosted by South Africa and Zimbabwe, features 12 teams with automatic qualification decided through rankings.

Ireland will now compete in the 10-team ICC Men's Cricket World Cup Qualifier. The winner earns direct qualification, while second, third and fourth advance to the World Cup Super Series for the remaining spot.
