Jacks sees tri-series as mini World Cup for England

Will Jacks says England must treat remaining tri-series matches as World Cup preparation after two defeats.

Will Jacks said England must treat their remaining tri-series matches against Pakistan and Sri Lanka as preparation for the 2027 World Cup after back-to-back defeats left them needing to win both games. England lost to Pakistan by 87 runs and then fell short by two wickets when Sri Lanka chased 430 in Rawalpindi on Thursday. Jacks said the situation mirrored England's 2019 World Cup campaign when they also had to win their final group games.

England must beat Pakistan on Sunday and Sri Lanka on Thursday to stay in contention for the tri-series final on October 31. Jacks noted that the pressure of must-win matches cannot be replicated in training or bilateral series. He added that the experience would serve as a stepping stone toward the World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia.

Sam Curran conceded 103 runs in nine overs during the defeat to Sri Lanka, the most expensive figures by an England bowler in ODIs. Jacks said some days the conditions do not work for any bowler and that the team would learn from the setbacks.
