VVS Laxman set for new BCCI role with powers over Indian cricket operations

VVS Laxman is set to be appointed BCCI Director of Cricket while keeping his post at the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. The role hands him oversight of staff appointments across senior and junior teams, player pathways for men and women, and rehabilitation programmes. His contract runs another two years under the new title.

The move puts him above both head coach Gautam Gambhir and selection committee chairman Ajit Agarkar. Agarkar's term ends in September, and Gambhir's role has drawn scrutiny after India's results in the current World Test Championship cycle. Both will stay until the 2027 ODI World Cup.

Laxman has already filled in as interim coach for a T20I series in Zimbabwe and stayed involved with the senior side through the CoE. The new structure ties every tier of Indian cricket to one former player who has steered clear of public factional lines.
