Lionel Messi retires from Argentina duty after father's death

Lionel Messi has retired from Argentina duty following the death of his father Jorge Messi on August 8. The Argentine forward played 207 games for his country and scored 125 goals, including 21 in World Cups.

Messi had already drafted his farewell letter two days after the World Cup final. His father's passing made him certain it was time to step away from international football.

Messi's wife wrote that their children saw their father never give up during his international career. He finished as Argentina's all-time leading scorer and is placed second behind Kylian Mbappe by one goal in World Cup scoring.
