Mahela Jayawardene steps down as Mumbai Indians head coach

Mahela Jayawardene has stepped down as Mumbai Indians head coach ahead of the 2027 season. The former Sri Lankan captain had two stints in charge and led the franchise to three IPL titles.

Mumbai Indians and Jayawardene mutually agreed to part ways after the team struggled to remain competitive in the 2026 season. The franchise now plans to begin a new chapter with different leadership.

Jayawardene said Mumbai Indians had been a very special part of his journey for over a decade. The club thanked him for his contribution across his two tenures.
