Mandhana's elevation signals BCCI's willingness to hand full ownership to a batter with different style and values

Mandhana takes full tactical ownership as captain with a leadership record built on two WPL titles and recent form rather than continuity with the previous regime.

The BCCI's appointment of Smriti Mandhana as full-time white-ball captain marks a deliberate shift toward a leader whose style and values differ fundamentally from Harmanpreet Kaur's. Mandhana brings two WPL titles with Royal Challengers Bengaluru and recent form as the leading run-scorer in T20Is, while Harmanpreet exits after a decade that included India's first ODI World Cup title but also back-to-back T20 World Cup exits.

The decision follows a review meeting in Guwahati where selectors favoured a change with an eye on the future. Mandhana has already led India in 18 T20Is and four ODIs as deputy and will now assume full tactical and cultural ownership of the side. Shafali Verma and Deepti Sharma will serve as vice-captains in T20Is and ODIs respectively.

India's next assignment is a series against Zimbabwe starting October 16, followed by the inaugural Women's Champions Trophy in February. The appointment hands Mandhana responsibility for selection and strategy rather than a caretaker role, signalling the board's intent to build around a batter whose leadership record rests on franchise success and individual form.
