Mark Wood retires from international cricket due to knee injury

England fast bowler Mark Wood has announced his retirement from international cricket with immediate effect due to a knee injury. The 36-year-old has not played for England since an eight-wicket defeat to Australia in the first Test of the 2025/26 Ashes series, where he suffered a recurrence of the same injury which ruled him out of the remainder of the series.

Wood took 119 wickets in 38 Tests after making his debut in 2015. He was part of England's 2019 50-over World Cup-winning squad and the 2022 T20 World Cup-winning side. The Durham paceman only returned to action in the first Ashes Test in Perth in November after 15 months out with an elbow injury followed by knee surgery.

Wood said his contract ends in September and that medical advice ruled out Test cricket and 50-over cricket. He retires as England's sixth-highest wicket-taker in men's T20s with 54 wickets from 38 matches and took 80 scalps in 70 one-day internationals. Wood will be part of the Sky Sports commentary team for Tuesday's one-day international between England and Sri Lanka in Durham.
