Mohammed Kaif demands clarity on Shami's continued exclusion from India squad

Mohammed Kaif says the BCCI should clarify why Mohammed Shami continues to be left out of India squads despite his domestic form.

Mohammed Kaif called for the BCCI to explain why Mohammed Shami continues to be overlooked for national selection despite strong domestic performances. The former India batter said selectors should provide transparency about the pacer's fitness concerns rather than leaving the issue unresolved. Shami was omitted from India's squads for the New Zealand tour despite taking 37 Ranji Trophy wickets last season at an average of 16.72.

Kaif noted that Shami has been successful against New Zealand in the past, claiming 15 wickets in four Tests and 38 in 16 ODIs. He said New Zealand batters would be relieved by Shami's absence from the touring party. Shami was rested for Bengal's second Ranji Trophy match against Services after bowling a heavy workload in the previous round.

Bengal coach Laxmi Ratan Shukla confirmed Shami requested the rest and remains fit. The 36-year-old has not played for India since the 2025 Champions Trophy final. His exclusion has raised questions about whether age or fitness concerns are the primary factor in the selection decision.
